The Process

Step 1: Get in touch!

Send me an email to discuss the project. Send along a few photos of what you want drawn and I can confirm a quote, and let you know which photo will work best.

Step 2: Secure your place in my schedule

Payment is due before I begin. Once settled I can let you know an approximate turnaround time, based on the complexity, and the distance it needs to be shipped. If you have an event you want the art for, please let me know right away.

Step 3: Mock-up creation

I take your best photo and then create a mock-up in Photoshop. This is where I decide on the composition, how much to zoom in, what details and distractions to remove, and if it needs one, how the background should look. I send this to you to approve or suggest changes. This is the best time to have your input in the process.

Step 4: The drawing stage

I map out the sketch and create the art using high quality pencil crayons. This part can take anywhere from 5 – 30 hours, depending on the size and complexity.

Step 5: Approval

I send you a photo of the art by email or through Facebook.   The pencils are high pigment and will not erase easily or completely from the paper so at this stage only very minor adjustments can be made.

Step 6: Ship to you

Shipping is not included in the cost so I will give the rates when you order depending on where you live, what size the portrait is , and whether you want it tracked. Frames are not included. I mail the larger art in a mailing tube and the small art flat in an envelope, protected with cardboard. Enjoy!

FAQ’s

  • What if what I want is not on the pricelist, e.g. a picture of my home?
I’m up for interesting projects! Let’s talk. For a custom quote, email me using the form below, or message me on my Facebook page.
  • Why can I only have one subject on the smallest paper?
I recommend only one subject so I can get the best results with the detail. If you specifically want two or more subjects on it, I may be willing to try, depending on the complexity of your photos. Each extra subject is an additional cost. Email or message me on my Facebook page to discuss.
  • What if I don’t have a good quality photo of who I want drawn?
The better the photo, the better the outcome. I can still make portraits with many damaged or fuzzier photos, however the results will be more stylized. The more photos you can send the better. I can let you know which from the ones you send would be a good fit my my art style.
  • What are your payment terms?
Due to the custom nature of the art I require a deposit of 50% to secure your booking and the balance paid before receiving the artwork paid via EMT. Please email me to discuss if you have special circumstances.
  • What is your process?
Once the quote is agreed upon I will send a terms document to agree to. When the deposit is paid I will spend time choosing the best composition from a selection of photos you send. The next step is making a rough photoshop mock up of the composition, which will be emailed to you for approval. Then I get to work on the artwork. When complete, and the final invoice paid I will ship the artwork rolled in a mailing tube.
  • Do you frame?
If framing is required as part of a gift, I can arrange this as an extra cost. Please email to discuss.
  • How long will the drawing take?
Every piece is different. If you have a target date, please let me know at the beginning and I will let you know if it is possible. In the requirements document I will outline the timeline so you know when we can expect to hear from each other during the process.
  • Can I request revisions?
The purpose of the mock up is to make sure you are happy with the layout and look before I start the drawing. However, I will consider up to 2 very minor revisions before completion. I put a lot of effort making sure my art is high quality and have not had anyone disappointed with the results.
  • Can we talk on the phone before I commit to see if we are a good fit?
Yes, if you are happy with my pricing and the look of my work, please email me to set up a time for a call. However, email is my preferred method of contact.
  • What is the medium used?
I use high quality light fast Prismacolor coloured pencils on Canson pastel paper.
  • Do you offer refunds?
No refunds are available. Likeness is a subjective quality and I can’t guarantee it. The process I use means you get a fair sense of how the finished art will look before I start drawing. I reserve the right to adjust the art as per my artistic style, but I always endeavour to capture the essence of your photo.
  • I’m ready to start. What’s the next step?
Email me using the contact form to lock in your spot on my schedule and get the ball rolling. I’ll answer any questions about the process so you know what to expect.
